The Origin

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, marked annually on the 29th of May, pays tribute to anyone who has served or is serving in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their courageous work. Peacekeepers can be civilians, military or police personnel working together to restore world peace and peacekeeping operations can include supporting fair elections, supervising ceasefires, and more. Peacekeepers have historically also worked to make sure womens’ voices are heard. This day also is observed in remembrance of the more than 4,000 people who lost their lives working towards peace. The United Nations General Assembly adopted this day on the 29th of May because that was the date when the first United Nations Peacekeeping mission was made- the “United Nations Truce Supervision Organization” which has operated in Palestine since 1948.

Importance of the Day

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers solemnly commemorates peacekeepers for their resilience and sacrifices, and pays respect to those who lost their lives. Peacekeepers have been crucial to the development of the world; more than two million civilians and military/police personnel have been working to help war-torn countries to peaceful countries since 1948. More than 70,000 peacekeepers are currently serving in missions around the world. Furthermore, this day also gives current peacemakers an opportunity to get to know the communities they are serving better by holding events such as sporting events and conferences on peace.

UNESCO BMW’s Involvement

UNESCO BMW is an organization that focuses on the restoration of world peace. We solemnly pay respects to those who lost their lives for peace and give thanks to those currently serving in peacekeeping operations. Our organization also supports women empowerment, much like the United Nations Peacekeepers. One of our programs, the ReWind program, encourages people to let go of any biases they may hold against other groups, and to be more loving and inclusive overall. Additionally, we offer several inner-peace building workshops to cultivate general wellness.

UNESCO BMW’s Vision

Our vision revolves around working to unite people through our inner peace and wellness events/workshops to contribute to the worldwide goal of peace. We welcome individuals of any age, ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, and more to join our programs to help those who are working towards peace by discussing issues like women empowerment. Our vision mission places emphasis on unifying nations.
