Eradication of poverty is one of the most important global challenges and a central objective of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Poverty is not only a lack of income; it can include limited access to education, healthcare, employment, housing, food, and other basic necessities. Addressing poverty is therefore essential for creating equal opportunities and improving the quality of life for communities around the world.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on 17 October. The day highlights the global effort to end poverty in all its forms and draws attention to the challenges faced by people living in poverty. It also promotes awareness of the importance of human dignity, social inclusion, equal opportunities, and access to basic services.

Role of the United Nations in Poverty Eradication

The United Nations (UN) plays an important role in global efforts to eradicate poverty by encouraging countries to include poverty reduction in their national policies and development strategies. Through its development agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 1 (No Poverty), the UN promotes a people-centered approach that focuses on empowering people living in poverty, reducing inequality, and expanding social protection.

The UN also supports countries in assessing how economic and social policies affect poor and vulnerable communities. By promoting international cooperation, inclusive development, and fairer access to resources and opportunities, the UN works toward creating long-term solutions to poverty.

Role of UNESCO BMW in Poverty Eradication

UNESCO BMW (Body & Mind Wellness) contributes to poverty eradication by promoting awareness, education, and well-being as important foundations for sustainable development. Through its educational and awareness initiatives, the organization encourages communities to recognize the connection between physical and mental well-being, education, social inclusion, and economic opportunities.

By sharing knowledge, creating awareness about global development issues, and encouraging community participation, UNESCO BMW supports the broader goal of empowering individuals and communities. Such efforts are particularly important because reducing poverty is not only about increasing income but also about improving access to education, opportunities, health, dignity, and social participation.

On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, initiatives that promote awareness and community engagement can help highlight the importance of collective action in creating more inclusive and sustainable societies.
