The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation is celebrated annually on September 12 by the international community, honouring cooperation, creativity, and mutual advancement among developing countries in the Global South. In order to remember the 1978 adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries, the UN General Assembly officially established the day in 2003. Originally observed in December, it was moved to September 12 in 2011.
What the day represents
Through South-South, triangular, and public-private agreements, the observance provides a forum for the global community to commemorate accomplishments, discuss development triumphs, investigate opportunities for cooperation, and provide tangible plans toward common objectives. These collaborations go beyond communication; instead of depending on outside assistance, countries create power from within by exchanging useful equipment and ideas, such as agricultural methods and medical advancements. Most notably, it celebrates advancements made by the Global South and increases awareness of UN initiatives to foster technical collaboration.
The scope is noteworthy: in 2021, commerce with other developing nations accounted for about 60% of high-tech exports from developing nations. The 2025 celebration highlighted domestic solutions in climate-smart agriculture, green technology, digital banking, and health that are being shared internationally, and it recognized the growing momentum throughout the Global South in terms of diplomatic influence, economic power, and alternative multilateral governance. In 2025, South-South and triangular collaboration increased social protection and used AI for inclusive development, according to the ILO.
Crucially, South-South cooperation strengthens poor nations’ sovereignty by granting them more autonomy and preventing wealthier nations from controlling aid, loans, or trade negotiations; it does not lessen the duty of wealthier nations to address global disparities.
How UNESCO BMW and ReWIND contribute
