Peace is one of humanity’s greatest needs and most precious blessings. Every year on September 21st, the world observes the “International Day of Peace.” The United Nations established this day in 1981 to raise awareness about peace, love, and brotherhood among people. The main purpose of this day is to prevent wars, violence, and hatred, and to promote harmony and tolerance among human beings.
The Importance of Peace
Without peace, progress, education, and prosperity are impossible to imagine. In war-torn regions, people are deprived of basic facilities, children’s education is disrupted, and economies collapse. In contrast, in a peaceful society, people can live freely, businesses flourish, and future generations move toward a better tomorrow.
How can Peace be Established?
To establish peace, it is first necessary to adopt tolerance and patience. Respecting people of different religions, cultures, and ideologies is the foundation of peace. In addition:
- Promoting dialogue: Resolving differences through conversation, not force.
- Spreading education: An educated society stays away from hatred and extremism.
- Strengthening the justice system: Where there is justice, peace prevails.
- Mutual respect: Respecting one another’s rights and opinions.
Our Responsibility
Peace is not solely the responsibility of governments or institutions; it is the duty of every individual to promote peace in their home, neighborhood, and society. Small steps can make a big difference for example, treating others with kindness, avoiding anger and hatred, and resolving conflicts with patience.
UNESCO BMW’s Role
International organizations also play a vital role in building a peaceful world. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has long worked to promote peace through education, science, culture, and communication, based on the belief that lasting peace must be built in the human mind, not just through treaties between governments. Alongside such large-scale global efforts, community organizations affiliated with UNESCO, such as Body and Mind Wellness (BMW), work at the grassroots level to raise healthy and self-aware individuals as a foundation for world peace. Programs run under this initiative focus on mental well-being, offering people practical tools to manage stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges, while also supporting arts, culture, women’s empowerment, and youth engagement within local communities. Together, such initiatives show that peace is nurtured not only through international policy but also through the wellness and awareness of individuals at the grassroots level.
Conclusion
The International Day of Peace reminds us that true prosperity in the world is only possible through peace. We must strive, both individually and collectively, to build a world where love prevails over hatred, and peace prevails over war. Let us all incorporate the message of this day into our lives and play our part in making the world a better and more peaceful place.
Peace is not merely the absence of war, but the presence of justice, love, and brotherhood.
