Protecting Land, Securing the FuWorld Day of Desertification and Drought Day

Desertification and drought are problems that are getting worse every day. They are quietly becoming some of the worlds dangerous environmental challenges. Every year, millions of hectares of land are lost because of climate change, people cutting down trees, and people doing things that are not good for the environment. This makes many people poor. Makes the environment unstable all around the world. The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is on June 17 every year. It aims to get people around the world to pay attention to this problem, take action to fix the land, protect the environment, and make sure we have a good future for our children and grandchildren.

History and Establishment of the Day

The problem of desertification got a lot of attention during the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the summit, countries talked about how bad environmental degradation and climate change are. As a result, they started talking about agreeing to deal with desertification and drought. On June 17 1994, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification was officially adopted in Paris, France. That year, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared June 17 as the “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.” The first time people around the world observed this day was in 1995, and since then, it has been observed every year through campaigns to raise awareness.

Desertification and drought have become global environmental challenges because of climate change. According to the United Nations than 40% of the Earth’s land is already damaged, and this affects about 3.2 billion people all around the world. This problem not only threatens our food and water but also makes people poor, hungry, and forces them to move away from their homes. It also makes economies unstable. The theme for this day in 2026 is “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.” This theme shows how important rangelands and drylands are for keeping the environment balanced, supporting different kinds of plants and animals, and helping millions of people make a living. Desertification is what happens when good land becomes dry, damaged, and less productive because of human activities. Drought is a period of time when there is not enough rain, which leads to water shortages and severe environmental and economic problems. These figures show that desertification and drought are not just issues but global crises that need international cooperation and immediate action.

Global Efforts

To deal with these challenges, governments and international organizations have started global initiatives. More than 130 countries have promised to achieve Land Degradation Neutrality by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. Projects like Africa’s “Great Green Wall” focus on fixing damaged land by planting trees and using farming methods. New technologies, including satellites and computer systems that can predict droughts, are also helping countries reduce damage and losses in farming.

UNESCO BMW and ReWIND Initiative

The UNESCO BMW initiative helps the environment, teaches people about climate change, and protects animals and plants through events and community work. These efforts matter because a lot of the Earth’s land is damaged. Over 40%, to be exact. A huge number of people, around 3.2 billion, are affected worldwide. The economic losses are huge, too, USD 880 billion every year.

The ReWIND initiative also helps fix the environment. It plants trees, encourages recycling, and teaches people how to manage land in a way. This helps reduce damage to the environment. Many countries are affected by drought. Over 100 to be exact. A lot of countries, over 130, are working together to fix damaged land. They want to protect the planet for generations.
