Introduction
World Pulses Day, held annually on 10 February, brings to the fore the important role that pulses can play in meeting global food security and nutritional needs. Lentils, beans, chickpeas, and peas contain high amounts of vegetarian protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, and essential minerals. These foods are also accessible, non-perishable, and an important component of people’s regular diet in different cultures. The promotion of pulses also leads to healthy eating habits and overcomes malnutrition in low- and middle-income sections of people.
The aim of “World Pulses Day” is very simple – to promote the consumption of pulses and to support those who grow them. If we do so, we shall strive to achieve “better nutrition, better production, better environment, and better life.”
In addition to being a source of proper nutrition, pulses are also great advocates of a sustainable environment. They increase soil fertility by enhancing nitrogen fixation in the soil, and their water requirement is lower compared to many other foods. The promotion of World Pulses Day reminds us that it is possible for small actions in our diets, such as increasing our consumption of pulses, to make a great difference in our health as humans and our planet.
Nutritional Powerhouses:
In many places, people can’t afford meat or dairy products; therefore, lentils become an invaluable source for them to get Protein. Lentils contain ample protein, and they are less expensive sources compared to other proteins coming from animals. In lentils, there is ample fiber content, and they work wonders for digestion and reducing Blood Sugar levels. In lentils, fat content, sodium, and fat are all low; therefore, they become an invaluable resource for a Healthy Heart because they contain Low Fat and low Sodium. In lentils, they become Powerhouses for Vitamins.
UNESCO BMW’s Involvement
UNESCO BMW supports this day by aligning its vision with the holistic goal of ecosystem restoration. Through the ReWIND initiative, we emphasize the value of individual and collective action in ecological awareness. By supporting youth-led initiatives, community storytelling, and arts-based advocacy, we bring attention to the importance of nurturing both outer and inner ecosystems.
UNESCO BMW’s Vision
On this International Day for Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystem, as recognized by UNESCO, our three main goals of the mission align deeply with global sustainability and ecological preservation efforts. We aim to restore the inner ecosystem by cultivating emotional clarity, empathy, and peace. We also seek to enhance inner creativity by encouraging artistic expression and innovative thought. Ultimately, we strive to spread inner peace globally by promoting mindfulness and cultural harmony. In honoring mangroves, we honor the essential connection between nature’s health and our own inner well-being.
