What is World Press Freedom Day?

World Press Freedom Day is an annual event celebrated on May 3rd to raise awareness about the importance of press freedom and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, following a recommendation by UNESCO’s General Conference. The day aims to promote independent and pluralistic media, and to protect journalists from attacks, harassment, and censorship. UNESCO Body Mind Wellness Club has its own part to play in World Press Freedom Day, as the organization plays a key role in promoting and defending press freedom and freedom of expression around the world. In order for this, UNESCO BMW leads the coordination of the global celebrations of World Press Freedom Day.
