Observed on February 11th.

What is International Day of Women and Girls in Science?

This is a day to celebrate the important role that women play in the fields of science and technology as well as support the empowerment and representation of women and girls in STEM. This year is the 8th time this day has been celebrated, showing the improvement in gender equality in recent years. By observing this day, the UN hopes to honor the STEM women who worked hard in the past and empower women and young girls who are currently working or aspiring to work in STEM fields.

What challenges do women face in science fields?

From the time of Aristotle till current day, there has been a severe underrepresentation of women in fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This is largely due to societal barriers that discourage women from getting higher education and “harder” jobs. These barriers also result in a noticeable amount of discrimination targeted to the few women who are in science careers. According to the UN, only 28% of engineering graduates are women, and a mere 12% of national science academies consists of women. The poor representation can also be attributed to the fact that promotions, higher research grants, and job opportunities are usually given to the men more than women.

Why is representation of women and girls in science important for society?

Introducing more diversity in the workspace leads to more open-mindedness, fresh perspectives, and creativity, all of which are integral to innovation in science. By honoring the women in science of the past and representing those who are currently in science, this will inspire future generations of women and girls who have longed to see themselves represented in STEM fields. Women, who have been subject to barriers to their education and/or job opportunities, can now pursue their passion, whether it be in science, technology, engineering, or math. While this resolution may seem insignificant, it can reduce gender biases and gender inequality across the board. It breaks stereotypes that disparage a woman’s intelligence and capabilities. By opening the gates wide open for women in STEM, young girls will be empowered through the field of science and this will greatly promote female empowerment and thus, gender equality. This is how society can truly advance.

How to celebrate women and girls in STEM?

Learning about the women whose efforts and perseverance have opened the doors for other women in STEM is a great way to celebrate the past and ongoing struggle for gender equality. Notable pioneers include Marie Curie, Dorothy Vaughan, LIllian Gibreth, Chien-Shiung Wu, and so many more. This day is also a reminder to make sure to not in any way discourage or discriminate against girls and women who aspire to be in STEM fields and instead support them. Advocating for representation through the vehicle of social media using the hashtag #WomenInScience or simply talking to people is also a great way to observe this occasion.

UNESCO BMW’s Involvement?

Following the footprint of UN and UNESCO, UNESCO Body and Mind Wellness, holds four online programs for each of the seasons every year. For the spring program, the theme is Women’s Empowerment Day. From art exhibitions, dance and music performances, to inspiring discussions and even guided meditations, the online programs are rich with knowledge, artistry, and significance. The programs focus on exploring the vital role of women in society and supporting women empowerment and gender equality. Additionally, UNESCO BMW itself is an organization that values equality for all. From youth engagement programs, to cultural art programs, UNESCO BMW is all about fresh perspectives, diversity and equality regardless of differences.
