“Tourism” when we hear this word it’s likely our brain associates it to travelling from one place to another. While travelling is an important part it’s also crucial to know that it isn’t the only dimension to tourism. It’s about the cultures, histories, people and communities that we encounter along the way. It allows us to step out of our familiar experiences and enter a world beyond them, to be able to develop a deeper appreciation for it.
Every year on September 27, the world observes World Tourism Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the social, cultural, political, and economic importance of tourism. The day has been celebrated since 1980, with September 27 chosen because it marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Statutes of the World Tourism Organization in 1970.
The Origin
Initially tourism was just about moving from one place to another however over the passage of time as travel expanded across borders, tourism became more about economic development, introducing culture exchanges, overseas employment and international understanding.
World tourism day was established to serve as a reminder of reflection on these wider contributions for the international community. Tourism is an industry built around human interaction, every journey creates an opportunity to encounter another culture, learn a new tradition, discover local art and cuisine, or understand a community from a different perspective. In today’s world it is acting as an internationally connecting bridge between people.
Importance of the day
Tourism day holds a lot of significance because everyday it is creating opportunities for communities while encouraging cultural exchange. Local businesses, artisans, guides, hospitality workers, and cultural organizations can all benefit when visitors engage with a destination.
Additionally, tourism gives opportunities for governments to preserve and showcase traditions that might get overlooked otherwise. The Best Tourism Villages initiative by UN Tourism, for instance, recognizes rural destinations where tourism helps preserve cultures and traditions, celebrate diversity, provide opportunities, and safeguard biodiversity.
Overall tourism is beneficial in every aspect. It’s an industry that helps fund wildlife parks, museums, monuments, natural parks etc. it connects people and creates unity between people from diverse backgrounds.
The theme for World Tourism Day 2026 is “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.” Hosted by El Salvador, this year’s theme explores how digital transformation and artificial intelligence can reshape the tourism sector by improving visitor experiences, efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability.
Technology has already changed the way we travel. From discovering destinations and planning journeys to using digital maps, translation tools, and personalized recommendations, technology has become an essential part of modern tourism.
However, innovation should not replace the human experience at the heart of travel. As artificial intelligence continues to develop, it is important to ensure that technology remains inclusive, responsible, and focused on connecting people with cultures and communities.
The 2026 theme therefore encourages us to look beyond technology itself and consider how innovation can help create a more accessible, sustainable, and meaningful future for tourism.
UNESCO BMW: Connecting People Through Culture
At UNESCO BMW, we believe that cultural exchange, creativity, dialogue, and human connection can contribute to a more peaceful and inclusive world.
Tourism naturally creates opportunities for these values to flourish. When people travel, they encounter different traditions, artistic expressions, languages, histories, and perspectives. These encounters can encourage curiosity and understanding while reminding us that our differences do not prevent us from sharing common hopes and experiences.
Our work with youth, arts, crafts, cultural exchange, and initiatives such as ReWIND reflects the importance we place on human wellbeing, creativity, and connection. These values can also shape the way we think about the future of tourism.
As artificial intelligence and digital technologies continue to transform the sector, we should ensure that innovation remains centred on people. The future of tourism should not simply make travel faster or more convenient. It should help communities become more visible, cultures more accessible, experiences more inclusive, and connections between people more meaningful tourism.
