
Every year, on 26th july, the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is celebrated globally to raise the awareness about the Mangrove forests, a fragile ecosystem under the threat of deforestation and climate change. This Day aims to facilitate solutions for the resilient management, conservations, and uses of mangrove ecosystems.
What Mangroves are?
Mangroves are unique Salt- tolerant trees and shrubs that exist in the transitional zone between land and sea. They play a very important role in maintaining ecological balance by protecting shorelines from erosion, reducing the impact of storms and floods, and providing habitat for a wide variety of marine and terrestrial species. Their soils act as powerful carbon sinks. Due to their environmental, economic, and social benefits, the conservation and sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems are essential for supporting biodiversity and ensuring the long-term resilience of coastal communities.
Mangrove Deforestation
Although mangroves play a vital role in coastal protection and climate regulation, they are being lost at an unprecedented rate than overall global forest losses, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts. Current estimates highlight that mangrove coverage has been divided by two in the past 40 years. This accelerating decline is attributed to a range of interrelated factors, including coastal development, habitat conversion, pollution, unsustainable resource use, and climate change impacts.
UNESCO Initiatives for Mangrove Protection and Restoration
- UNESCO supports the conservation of mangrove ecosystems worldwide.
- It integrates mangroves into Biosphere Reserves, World Heritage Sites, and UNESCO Global Geo parks to improve their protection, management, and scientific understanding.
- These efforts also promote sustainable development for local communities living near mangrove areas.
- At the scientific and policy level, UNESCO is committed to the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of blue carbon ecosystems, including mangroves, sea grasses, and tidal marshes.
- These ecosystems play a vital role in climate change mitigation by storing carbon.
- They also provide important ecosystem services such as:
- Supporting marine biodiversity
- Sustaining fisheries and food security
- Filtering water entering oceans and reefs
- Protecting coastlines from erosion and storm surges
- Through the MangRes project (2022–2025), UNESCO helps local communities restore and conserve mangroves, especially in biosphere reserves across Latin America and the Caribbean.
UNESCO BMW Initiative
In addition to awareness and restoration activities, the UNESCO BMW Club emphasizes capacity building and youth engagement in environmental conservation. Through workshops, training sessions, and community-based programs, the club equips young people with knowledge and practical skills to participate in mangrove protection efforts. It also highlights the role of scientific research and data-driven approaches in understanding ecosystem changes and improving conservation strategies. By fostering collaboration between educators, researchers, and local communities, the club contributes to building long-term resilience in coastal ecosystems while strengthening global environmental stewardship.
