The Origin
International Human Solidarity Day is observed every year on December 20. The day reflects one of the core pillars of the Millennium Declaration 2000, which identified solidarity as a fundamental value essential for international relations in the 21st century.
The idea gained momentum through global discussions on poverty, inequality and the need for collective action to achieve sustainable development. The UN further reinforced this vision when it established the World Solidarity Fund in 2002, to support poverty eradication and social development in the world’s most vulnerable communities.
The observance of International Human Solidarity Day therefore serves as a reminder that humanity shares a common destiny. One that must be shaped through unity, cooperation and mutual responsibility.
Importance of the Day
International Human Solidarity Day highlights the role of solidarity in addressing today’s most critical global challenges: poverty, conflict, climate change, economic inequality and social exclusion. The UN underscores that solidarity is not only a moral virtue but a practical strategy for building inclusive and peaceful societies. By encouraging nations to work together and support one another, the day strengthens global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It helps in the following:
- Promotes dialogue on social protection, equality and shared responsibility
- Encourages governments to uphold international commitments
- Mobilizes communities to support vulnerable populations
- Inspires individuals to practice compassion, cooperation and global citizenship
In a world increasingly marked by division and polarization, Human Solidarity Day calls for renewed commitment to unity and collective progress.
Theme for 2025
The spirit of International Human Solidarity Day 2025 aligns with the global call to:
‘Solidarity for Sustainable Development: Uniting Communities for a Shared Future.’
This focus emphasizes strengthening partnerships that uplift marginalized populations, promote social inclusion and encourage equitable access to opportunities. It encourages nations and institutions to:
- Build stronger social support systems
- Address rising global inequality
- Promote cooperative solutions to conflict and climate challenges
- Engage youth and civil society as leaders of solidarity-driven action
UNESCO BMW’s Involvement
The UNESCO Body and Mind Wellness initiative plays an active role in promoting the philosophy of human solidarity through its programs on education, cultural exchange and well-being. For the 2025 observance, UNESCO BMW plans a series of events designed to translate the principle of solidarity into meaningful community action. Activities include educational programs, intercultural dialogues, wellness initiatives and collaborative projects. BMW’s involvement ensures that Human Solidarity Day becomes not only a commemorative moment but also a catalyst for sustainable, community-rooted action.
UNESCO BMW’s Vision
UNESCO BMW envisions a world where solidarity becomes a natural way of life. Guided by the belief that unity and mutual support are essential for peace and human development, its vision includes:
- Promoting Education for Solidarity: Ensuring young people learn cooperation, empathy, and respect for diversity as foundational values.
- Strengthening Community Resilience: Encouraging collective well-being through shared initiatives, cultural exchange, and inclusive community-building.
- Advancing Holistic Wellness: Recognizing that inner harmony fosters social harmony, and that emotionally healthy individuals are more capable of solidarity.
- Supporting Institutions of Justice and Equality: Advocating governance structures rooted in fairness, transparency, and collective responsibility.
Through these efforts, UNESCO BMW strives to build a global culture where solidarity is not an occasional response to crisis but a constant force shaping a just, peaceful and interconnected world.
