World Tourism Day is observed every year on the 27th of September. The United Nations Tourism established this day and it was first celebrated in 1980. The date was chosen to also highlight the anniversary of the adoption of the UN Tourism Statues on the 27th of September, 1970. The adoption of the UN Tourism Statues was significant for tourism all around the world. World Tourism Day also comes at the beginning of the high season in the Southern Hemisphere of Earth, and the end of the high season in the Northern Hemisphere.
The Importance of the Day
Tourism is an extremely important, up and coming industry today. It contributes to not only economic growth, but also a spreading of cultures worldwide. Tourists get to taste new foods, listen to new languages, learn more about other cultures, and talk to new people. Furthermore, tourism defies discrimination and prejudices, leading to a development of world peace. Essentially, tourism, at its core, is an educational adventure.
World Tourism Day highlights tourism’s social, cultural, political, and economic impact internationally. When celebrating this day, it is important to note that tourism is not only for profit, but also for promoting diversity, sustainability, and deep connections. Additionally, World Tourism Day highlights the importance of accessible tourism. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) — the United Nations’ agency behind the development of the day— ensures that traveling is accessible for those who are low-income or with disabilities.
UNESCO BMW’s Vision
Our mission is to promote and to put into action programs that help raise a new generation of peacemakers, to create the conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and people, based upon respect for shared values.
UNESCO BMW’s Involvement
UNESCO BMW holds many wellness events such as our ReWind program to help others turn their stress into something much more manageable and foster peace— much like tourism. The ReWind program has 24 weeks of guided online sessions/workshops. In addition, in the UNESCO Body, Mind, and Wellness Center, in Frederick, Maryland, we hold bi-weekly wellness meditation on Tuesdays (5:30 p.m.) and Thursdays (7:00 p.m.). The meditation can combat issues such as anxiety and depression. For those looking to do meditative wellness workshops online, we also offer those via Zoom, Monday through Friday, at 12:00 p.m. (New York time).
