Why Is This Day Celebrated?

Due to its vast reach, unparalleled popularity, and foundation of positive values, sport is ideally positioned to contribute toward the United Nations’ objectives for development and peace. To raise awareness of this potential, 6 April was declared as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) by the UN General Assembly. The adoption of this day signifies the increasing recognition by the UN of the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights, social progress, and economic development. The UN celebrates this day annually to highlight its significance and promote global awareness.

Peace situation in the contemporary world

The world today faces continuous socio-economic chaos, leading to the loss of human lives, widespread human rights crises, and economic instability. Such disorder has resulted in increased suffering, particularly mental stress and depression. Among the most affected groups are women and children, especially in underdeveloped regions where gender inequality remains a major challenge. Many women are deprived of their right to education and restricted from participating in domestic and economic affairs.

Peace and sports

In an environment of global unrest, sports can act as a bridge between nations, fostering unity and harmony. By bringing people together, sports encourage cultural exchanges and strengthen diplomatic ties, offering a platform for mutual understanding and cooperation. Sporting events and collaborations have the potential to reduce conflicts, create economic opportunities, and enhance international trade. Furthermore, the role of sports in boosting global commerce and curbing inflation highlights its economic significance, making it a key factor in the sustainable development of humanity.

UNESCO BMW’s Vision

UNESCO BMW envisions a world where sports play a key role in promoting peace, health, and social well-being. The organization strongly advocates for physical activity, recognizing its vital role in maintaining mental and physical health. Today, depression and stress have become widespread issues, and the lack of physical activity has further aggravated these problems. To address this, UNESCO BMW is actively promoting yoga and meditation as effective methods for stress management and overall well-being. Additionally, it continues to address global socio-political issues with the goal of finding sustainable solutions.
