The Origin

International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, honors the achievements of women across political, economic, social, and cultural domains while advocating for gender equality. Originating from labor movements in Europe and North America in the early 20th century, the day gained global recognition when the United Nations officially acknowledged it in 1975. Initially driven by demands for better wages, voting rights, and improved working conditions, it has since evolved into a powerful movement addressing broader gender disparities and the ongoing fight for women’s rights.

Importance of the Day

This day serves as a reminder of the progress made towards gender equality while highlighting persistent challenges such as wage gaps, underrepresentation in leadership, and gender-based violence. It encourages collective action to foster inclusive societies where women and girls can reach their full potential. By acknowledging their contributions and advocating for gender equity, communities can drive social justice, economic growth, and sustainable development.

Theme for 2025

The theme for International Women’s Day 2025 focuses on accelerating action toward gender equality through initiatives, movements, and opportunities. Small but meaningful actions, such as supporting women-led businesses, donating to women-focused organizations, and amplifying the voices of female creators, can contribute to breaking cycles of discrimination. The youth, as future change-makers, are encouraged to participate in events and discussions that drive this cause forward.

UNESCO BMW’s Involvement

UNESCO BMW actively supports gender equality through various empowerment initiatives. The Women’s Empowerment Program provides educational opportunities, leadership training, and mentorship, enabling women to build confidence and pursue their aspirations. Additionally, the ReWIND program promotes inner peace and inclusivity, encouraging individuals to challenge stereotypes and biases. By aligning with the UN theme, “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” UNESCO BMW continues its commitment to fostering an equitable and diverse global society.

UNESCO BMW’s Vision

Our vision is to celebrate women’s achievements while dismantling gender stereotypes and fostering a society where women receive equal recognition and opportunities. Through cultural, social, and intellectual programs, we aim to inspire meaningful discussions and actions that drive gender parity. By encouraging collaboration and awareness, we envision a world where equality is not just an aspiration but a lived reality for all.
