The Origin

The International Day of Happiness, celebrated annually on March 20th, underscores the importance of happiness and well-being in people’s lives. It traces its roots to Bhutan, where King Jigme Singye Wangchuck introduced the concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) in 1972, measuring a country’s progress based on psychological and physical well-being, social relationships, and environmental harmony. Inspired by this, UN advisor Jayme Illien proposed the idea of an international observance, leading the United Nations General Assembly to proclaim March 20th as the International Day of Happiness in 2012. Since its first celebration in 2013, the day has served as a call to prioritize happiness and well-being as fundamental human goals.

Importance of the Day

Happiness is more than just an emotion—it is a crucial factor in overall well-being. Research shows that happier individuals tend to enjoy better health, enhanced productivity, and stronger social connections. The World Happiness Report, compiled annually by the United Nations, ranks countries based on social, economic, and environmental well-being. The report underscores that happiness should be a key goal of national policies, as it contributes to sustainable development, poverty eradication, and mental well-being. Recognizing happiness as a fundamental human right, this day encourages individuals and governments to create societies where people can thrive emotionally, socially, and economically.

Theme for 2025

The theme for International Day of Happiness 2025 is “Caring and Sharing,” emphasizing the importance of compassion, social connection, and collective well-being. It encourages people to cultivate happiness through acts of kindness, community engagement, and a sense of belonging. From small actions like supporting local initiatives to large-scale policies promoting mental health and work-life balance, this theme reminds us that happiness flourishes in connected and supportive communities.
