The Origin

World Tourism Day, celebrated every year on September 27th, was established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to highlight the importance of tourism and its significant role in fostering cultural understanding, peace, and global economic growth. The day was chosen to commemorate the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes in 1970, marking a pivotal moment in the history of global tourism.

Tourism and Peace

This year’s theme, “Tourism and Peace,” underscores the critical role that tourism plays in promoting global harmony and cultural exchange. In times of conflict, tourism often suffers, depriving local communities of income and exacerbating poverty. However, tourism also serves as a powerful tool for building bridges between nations, fostering understanding, and creating networks of “messengers of peace” who advocate for global unity and the protection of shared cultural heritage.

Impact of Violence and War

The adverse effects of violence and war on tourism are profound. Where conflict erupts, tourism declines, leading to economic hardship for local populations who rely on it for their livelihood. War not only destroys infrastructure but also devastates the social and cultural fabric of affected areas, making the restoration of peace and tourism crucial for recovery.

Significance of World Tourism Day

World Tourism Day serves to raise global awareness of the value of tourism and its contribution to social, cultural, and economic development. The occasion aligns with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals by highlighting the role of tourism in advancing social learning, preserving world heritage, and promoting sustainable development. Celebrated worldwide, it encourages countries to leverage tourism for growth, development, and cultural identity.
