Understanding International Volunteer Day
Every year on December 5th, the world celebrates International Volunteer Day (IVD), a day dedicated to recognizing the significant contributions of volunteers in promoting socio-economic development at local, national, and international levels. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985, IVD serves as a platform to encourage governments, volunteer-involving organizations, and individual volunteers to collaborate in addressing global challenges and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The United Nations Unwavering Support for Volunteerism
UN Volunteers are working in 150 countries and territories around the world. Currently, UN volunteers are on the frontlines to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza and Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict, to help the victims of floods in Libya and to rebuild infrastructure, provide essential services, and promote peace and reconciliation in Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq.UN Volunteers work on the frontlines of development, bringing their diverse perspectives and experiences to bear on the challenges faced by communities around the world.
United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Program
The UNV program, established in 1970, stands as a testament to the UN’s commitment to volunteerism. UNV mobilizes and deploys skilled volunteers to support UN agencies, governments, and non-profit organizations in their development efforts. UN Volunteers contribute their expertise and passion to a wide range of areas, including poverty reduction, peacebuilding, environmental protection, and humanitarian assistance.
UN’s Role in Promoting IVD
UNV plays a pivotal role in organizing and coordinating IVD celebrations worldwide. The program works closely with governments, civil society organizations, and individual volunteers to raise awareness of the importance of volunteerism and mobilize communities to engage in volunteer activities both online and onsite (localand abroad).

UNESCO BMW’s Involvement
The UNESCO Body and Mind Wellness Club empowers individuals by offering job training and professional development workshops and creates global engagement opportunities for them. In addition, the UNESCO BMW program focuses on physical and mental wellness, ecology, and community activism with the aim to bring a positive change in society.
UNESCO BMW’s Vision
Our vision mission encompasses three main goals that are also in line with this occasion today and engage people of all ages, especially the youth improvement of the inner ecosystem, enhancement of inner creativity through arts and crafts, and, lastly, encouragement of inner peace globally.
