What is it about?

World Science Day for Peace and Development is a significant global observance that aims to promote the critical role of science in achieving inner peace, human rights, and sustainable development. Celebrated annually on November 10th, this day encourages people from all walks of life to recognize the importance of science and its potential to improve our world.

The History behind

World Science Day for Peace and Development was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001 (See here). The primary objective behind its creation was to emphasize the role of science in society and promote the importance of using science for peace and development. Since then, WSDD has been celebrated annually on November 10th in over 100 countries around the world. Each year, WSDD is organized around a different theme, which highlights the important role of science in addressing a specific challenge facing humanity.

The Importance of World Science Day

Promoting Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity: Science thrives on diversity, as it encourages different perspectives, ideas, and innovations. Inclusive and equitable access to scientific opportunities ensures that all individuals, regardless of their background, can contribute to advancements in science and technology.

Mind Wellness and Self-Confidence: Through scientific knowledge, individuals can enhance their self-confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and ultimately improve their well-being. The practice of science nurtures curiosity, resilience, and adaptability, contributing to inner peace and personal growth.

Green Technologies and Sustainable Living: Science plays a pivotal role in the development of green technologies and sustainable practices that are vital for protecting the environment and saving our planet. From eco-friendly building materials to sustainable packaging solutions, science provides innovative solutions to address our environmental challenges.

Taking Action for a Better World: World Science Day encourages people to take action for the betterment of society. By promoting scientific literacy, individuals can make informed decisions and actively participate in shaping policies and initiatives that uplift humanity.

Theme for 2023: “Building trust in Science”

The influence of science in shaping the trajectory of our shared future hinges upon one pivotal factor: trust. The theme for 2023 aims to capture and convey just that. “Trust in science is a complex issue. It affects the way in which scientists operate and the way science is perceived by society. Also, enhancing trust in science strengthens science-based policy decisions and society’s support for their application.” (Quoted from here.)

UNESCO BMW’s Involvement

UNESCO BMW has organized workshops and talks inviting experts from their scientific fields to raise awareness (See here and here). We also promote scientific research on human wellbeing, and advocate for policies that support the use of science and technology to improve human well-being.

UNESCO BMW’s Vision

Our vision mission encompasses three main goals that are also in line with this occasion today and engage people of all ages, especially the youth improvement of the inner ecosystem, enhancement of inner creativity through arts and crafts, and, lastly, encouragement of inner peace globally.
