International Day of Non-Violence

The History Behind

The International Day of Non-Violence is observed on 2nd October every year as a tribute to the enduring legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born on this day in 1869. Gandhi’s unwavering commitment to non-violent resistance showed the world the transformative power of non-violence in bringing about positive social and political reform. Throughout history, we have seen Gandhi’s ideologies inspire leaders around the world, like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, to lead non-violent movements that have brought out positive reforms validating the effectiveness of non-violence.

In recognition of Gandhi’s contributions to peace and non-violence, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on June 15, 2007, to establish the International Day of Non-Violence.

The Spirit of Non-Violence

In a world often marked by conflict, discord, and violence, the spirit behind nonviolence emerges as a beacon of hope and a powerful force for positive change. Rooted in the principles of human rights, inner peace, and the interconnectedness of mind and body, nonviolence embodies the profound essence of humanity’s potential for empathy, compassion, and transformation. The spirit of nonviolence extends beyond external conflicts; it delves deep into the realms of mental health and mind wellness. Nonviolence encourages individuals to cultivate a sense of tranquility within themselves, as inner peace is a prerequisite for promoting peace in the external world.

UNESCO BMW’s Involvement

UNESCO Body and Mind Wellness Club has and continues to put an effort into spreading the ideas of non-violence and inner peace amongst the youth. We have offered distinguished speakers to the community to uplift inner peace awareness, internships to promote the vision of world peace and unity, and Season of Non-Violence projects (See here). Our ecosystem stewardship and inner peace programs aim to develop the inner beings within through spirituality and meditation.

UNESCO BMW’s Vision

Our vision mission encompasses three main goals that are also in line with this occasion today and engage people of all ages, especially the youth improvement of the inner ecosystem, enhancement of inner creativity through arts and crafts, and, lastly, encouragement of inner peace globally.
