Promoting Global Harmony and Unity

In a world often marred by conflicts, violence, and discord, the need for peace has never been
more apparent. Recognizing this universal aspiration, the International Day of Peace, observed
on September 21st each year, serves as a poignant reminder of the value of harmony,
cooperation, and understanding among nations and individuals alike. This day, often referred to
as Peace Day, is a testament to humanity’s shared goal of creating a better, more peaceful
world.

Origins of Peace Day

The concept of an International Day of Peace was first proposed in 1981 by the United Nations
General Assembly. The intention behind the proposal was to designate a day dedicated to
strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. The vision
was to encourage humanity to work together to promote peace and prevent conflicts. In 2001,
the General Assembly officially declared September 21 as the International Day of Peace,
coinciding with the opening day of the General Assembly’s annual session.

UNESCO’s Role in Promoting Peace

UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, plays a crucial
role in advancing the principles of peace, tolerance, and mutual understanding. The
organization firmly believes that education, cultural exchange, and the sciences contribute to
fostering lasting peace. Through its various programs and initiatives, UNESCO works to
promote intercultural dialogue, cultural diversity, and the dissemination of knowledge to build
bridges of communication and cooperation.

One of the notable initiatives by UNESCO in support of Peace Day is its collaboration with the
BMW Group. The two entities have joined forces to create the “UNESCO-BMW Group
Consultation on Arts and Intercultural Learning.” This platform aims to explore the potential of
arts-based practices in fostering intercultural dialogue and understanding. By harnessing the
power of art and culture, this initiative seeks to transcend language barriers and promote
empathy, contributing to the overall goal of global peace.

Peace Through Cultural Exchange

Cultural diversity is a wellspring of creativity and innovation, enriching societies and providing a
platform for mutual respect. UNESCO emphasizes the importance of preserving and celebrating
different cultural traditions while encouraging dialogue between them. It is through cultural
exchange that societies can overcome stereotypes, prejudice, and misconceptions, ultimately
fostering an environment conducive to lasting peace.

Individual Contributions to Peace

While global organizations like UNESCO and the United Nations play significant roles in
advocating for peace, individuals also hold the power to make a difference. Each person can
contribute to a more peaceful world by promoting tolerance, understanding, and compassion in
their daily interactions. Acts of kindness, empathy, and open-mindedness can collectively create
a ripple effect that extends far beyond individual interactions.

On this International Day of Peace, let us reflect on the importance of unity, empathy, and
cooperation. It is a day to remember that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but a
dynamic state that requires constant nurturing. Whether through educational efforts, cultural
initiatives, or personal interactions, each step toward peace is a step toward a brighter future for
all.
As we commemorate September 21st as Peace Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to building
a world where differences are celebrated, dialogue is cherished, and conflicts are resolved
through understanding. By doing so, we honor the spirit of humanity’s shared aspirations and
work together to make peace a reality for generations to come.

UNESCO BMW’s involvement in Striving for Inner Peace

UNESCO BMW has provided inner peace, Zen, Tao, Confucius, Zarathustra, and Sufism style
practices based on the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve an
awakening of the soul as well as peace for the global society. Since 2014, such stress relief and
creative programs have included the Frederick community and beyond, with a focus on
individual and family reintegration using methods such as chakra meditation, Feldenkrais, and
inner wisdom. Each one-hour guided session focuses on inner awareness, introspection,
relaxation, and Thoughtlessness meditative practices to coach, support, and uplift the emotional
and mental well-being of all.

We recently also held the ā€œMeditation for Lifeā€™s Chaosā€ 9-Day Meditation June 2022 Program
through which global youth pioneers provide insight into topics that may affect many people in
achieving inner peace such as bullying, mental health, etc. Through these goals and our efforts,
we hope to provide a platform of inner peace and awareness to the table to achieve total
wellness of body, mind, and spirit.

Our mission is firmly rooted in the principles championed by UNESCO, an organization of
profound significance. Our mission encompasses three main goals that are also in line with this
occasion today and engage people of all ages, especially the youth-improvement of the inner
