What is Children’s Day

Children’s Day, celebrated every second Sunday of June in the United States, is a red-letter day to memorialize the innocence and joy children bring to our world. The day, which will be celebrated on June 11th this year, also aims to shed light on improving the welfare of the global youth.

Origin of Children’s Day

This day originated from a fateful June Sunday at a Massachusetts church in which Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard held a special service for children. Children’s Day, not to be confused with World Children’s Day on November 20th, is celebrated at different dates around the world. For example, in most countries which were once part of the Eastern Bloc and the current Communist countries, the day is celebrated on June 1st. Some countries even have a Children’s Week, such as the Philippines, which celebrates the week from January 27th to January 29th.

Purpose of Children’s Day

Children’s Day is not merely an excuse for children to convince their parents to buy them ice cream. Indeed, this day sheds light on the incredible contributions children have made to fix complex issues, ranging from climate change to mental health. In the past couple of years, education has become a primary focus. Global organizations have spent more resources on the primary education level, in which children begin to become more aware of the world around them and grasp fundamental skills for their future education as well as the real world.

UNESCO BMW’s Involvement

UNESCO Body and Mind Wellness Club is committed to empowering children and engaging in opportunities for young people globally. Last fall, for World Children’s Day, UNESCO BMW hosted a webinar that delved into hot youth topics from climate change to technology overload. Additionally, UNESCO BMW organized virtual sessions to showcase the many ambitious and talented young people who are passionate about ensuring global action and spreading inner peace. UNESCO BMW also works with a multitude of educational institutions to promote child welfare.

UNESCO BMW’s Vision

Our vision mission encompasses three main goals that are also in line with this occasion today and engage people of all ages, especially the youth-improvement of the inner ecosystem, enhancement of inner creativity through arts and crafts and, lastly, encouragement of inner peace on a global level.
