What is World Telecommunication and Information Society Day?

World Information Society Day has been celebrated on May 17th every year since 1969. In the modern and complex society, communication technologies serve a vital purpose to help transmit information around the globe. Initially this day was celebrated to mark the foundation and signing of the International Telegraphic Convention in 1865.  But in the fall of 2006,  the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Plenipotentiary conference in Turkey decided to celebrate both World Telecommunication Day as well as World Information Society Day on May 17th.  Henceforth, the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated each spring to highlight the importance of modern communication technologies as well as the equitable development and distribution of these technologies.

By placing digital information technology in the spotlight, this day also promotes diversity and inclusion.  When the only barrier to entry is an internet connection, anyone no matter where they are from can showcase their talent – especially in the form of music and arts – and voice their opinion. Furthermore, the Internet makes financing more accessible for traditionally overlooked groups that may have trouble obtaining money due to domestic crises or even more simple issues like transportation trouble.  The ITU’s goal is to help highlight the power of modern communication technology and showcase technology’s potent effects.
