History of International Customs Day
International Customs Day marks the 30th birthday of the World Customs Organization (WCO). The organization was established in 1952 and at the time it was known as the Customs Co-operation Council (CCC). The intent of the organization was to improve the customs agencies globally by making them more stream-lined and efficient. The CCC started off with only seventeen European countries, but now the WCO works with 184 custom agencies from all over the world. Thatâs around 98% of world trade!
What is the purpose of International Customs Day?
The World Customs Organization supports and guides customs agencies from different countries in order to build a better interconnected global community through trade. Albeit the infamous belief that foreign goods may hurt them, local economies are actually boosted through global trade. Through fair and beneficial global trade, the WCO envisions a âa safer and more prosperous worldâ. All over the world, integrous and diligent customs agents work hard to fulfill this great vision. They manage the flow of goods and collect tariffs for imports and exports. International Customs Day is the day to celebrate these customs officers for all their hard work in keeping global trade up and running.
How to celebrate International Customs Day?
WCOâs theme for International Customs Day 2023 is called âNurturing the next generationâ. It entails spreading awareness and knowledge about customs agents and their hard work. This is to promote pride for customs administrations in the youth. This can be accomplished through youth engagement programs and workshops, by showing appreciation for the persevering customs workers, and spreading knowledge about customs officialsâ responsibilities and accomplishments.
