International Mountain Day is observed annually on December 11 to raise awareness about the importance of mountains in human life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development, and to forge alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world.
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2002 the UN International Year of Mountains, and on that occasion recognized 11 December as International Mountain Day beginning in 2003. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organizes the annual commemoration of the Day to raise awareness
Every year, UNESCO commemorates the Day by disseminating information about projects and activities related to the year’s theme.

Theme for 2022
Women Move Mountains will be the theme of this year’s International Mountain Day (IMD) on December 11th
Women play an important role in the environmental protection and social and economic development of mountains. They are frequently the primary managers of mountain resources, biodiversity guardians, keepers of traditional knowledge, custodians of local culture, and traditional medicine experts.
International Mountain Day 2022 is a chance to promote gender equality and so improve social justice, livelihoods, and resilience.
FAO, the principal UN agency for this International Day, will create communication materials in all six UN languages in the coming months, which will be available on their website.
