“It is in your hands, to make a better world for all who live in it.” – Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated in recognition of his contribution to humanity. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Before becoming the president, he was jailed for 27 years for standing up to the human rights abuses by the apartheid government against South Africans. In 1994 he was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a representative democratic election. He focused on dismantling the legacy of white minority rule and by promoting racial and post-apartheid reconciliation in the early 1990s.

After his presidency, Mandela became a philanthropist and focused on Education. According to him, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” He continued to pursue noble work such as school construction, rural development, combating HIV/AIDS, and raising awareness.
This day celebrates Nelson’s commitment to human rights, justice, and freedom. His legacy of humility, service, and love for making the world a better place continues to be reflected on and is a source of inspiration for world peace.
