What is National Nutrition Week?

Celebrated during the first week of September, National Nutrition Week educates the public about the significance of nutrition. This week involves fun activities, workshops, and campaigns that help us learn how to make smart food choices. It’s all about understanding why malnutrition and obesity are concerns and how to live healthier lives by eating better (Netmeds).

How Can We Improve Our Nutrition?

We can improve our nutrition in various ways, such as eating different foods, controlling our portions, and staying informed on nutritional guidelines.

Consuming a Diverse Range of Foods

We must take a holistic approach to our eating habits and lifestyle choices to improve our nutrition. Being mindful of portion sizes, staying hydrated, and reducing our consumption of highly processed foods can also help us achieve better nutrition. By reading and understanding food labels, we can make informed decisions when cooking at home, leading to healthier choices and a positive relationship with food. Adults with a varied diet live longer and have a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion).

Portion Control

Understanding the optimal portion size for each food group is a big step in improving our nutrition. The food pyramid is an excellent visual for this! The Food Pyramid shows how much of what you eat overall should come from each shelf to achieve a healthy, balanced diet. The shape of the Food Pyramid offers the types of foods and drinks people need to eat most for healthy eating. (Ireland Department of Health).

The six food groups are carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits, protein, dairy, and fats.

Your nutrient needs depend on age, gender, height, weight, and physical activity. You can find the right amount for you at Nutrition Calculator
